Frequently Asked Questions

Have you ever wondered?

.. Are you ready to wander?

WHAT IS A WORKATION?

Jump onto that rocket launch because we just hit the fast-forward button! In the future of work, we have been gifted with the ability to bring our office wherever the Wi-Fi twinkles.

A workation means to combine work with travel whilst working remotely – meaning to be location independent indefinitely or for a period of time.

It creates opportunities to take balanced and well-deserved quality time off, whilst having the ability to manage responsibilities, follow up, or continue business as usual. Travel has never been more accessible for those working in corporate jobs. This trend got up to major speed because of the pandemic and has become one of the most sought-after company benefits.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A WORKATION?

  • Get inspired during leisure, gain new perspectives, and spark your creativity.

  • Go on an adventure and be more active.

  • Explore nature and deep dive culture.

  • Create a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

  • Become more productive.

  • Feeling more relaxed.

  • Make the most of your time, save time on commutes, and access holiday mode in a heartbeat.

  • Reuniting with co-workers, former colleagues, and friends or establishing new connections and relationships.

HOW TO HAVE A SUCCESFUL WORKATION?

Plan and organize your workation wisely!

It’s important to know where you will be staying, and if there is a steady Wi-Fi speed so you can be productive. Depending on the period you are leaving this could impact the decision on where to go whilst chasing the sun or other adventures.

Workations generally provide a lot of opportunities to travel during the off-shoulder season. This is decreasing pressure on tourist hot spots, resulting in lesser crowds and reduced costs. Are you planning to travel by car, bus, train, boat, and/or plane? When flying make sure to double-check flight schedules and check if there’s an option to hold workation packages, flights & airfare whilst discussing and planning your getaway accordingly.

It would be of great advice to double-check legislation that applies to your passport/visa/work status. Step by step governments are starting to provide digital nomad and remote working visas. There are different travel and cancelation policies so make sure to arrange one that covers you accordingly and purchase this prior to booking your workation.

If you are being employed apply/discuss with your leaders and HR department in a timely manner.

WHICH PEOPLE GO ON A WORKATION?

Entrepreneurs and employees at companies with remote and hybrid work strategies tend to have access to workations. Jobs & roles with high potential for remote work opportunities are mainly found within Management and Consulting, Internet and Technology (IT), Sales, Customer Success, Recruitment, Personal Assistance, and Marketing. Have a look at the research “Remote” performed; ‘Industries with the most remote opportunities in 2022 and beyond’. In general, freelancers are highly known to apply a location-independent lifestyle.

More people continue to get access to this amazing benefit as employees want more flexibility and employers see benefits too. It creates opportunities for autonomy and time management. Mental health and productivity play a big part in the successful outcome of workations.

The government of The Netherlands previously implemented the ‘Flexible Working Act’, providing the right to request ‘work from home’ or a different location from the employer. Currently the addition of the ‘Right to work where you want Act’ has passed the Lower House and is awaiting approval from the Upper House. Meaning that Dutch employees could get the right to request work from another location within the EU if the law gets approved. The EU wants to increase the opportunity for movement, yet current tax systems are a tough challenge to overcome.

Companies allowing workations tend to apply a maximum of 30/45 workdays per country to avoid the risk of tax residency kicking in. Read more details about this in the “Flexa” blog ‘Work from Anywhere (WFA) wtf?!’.

HOW LONG IS A WORKATION?

The duration depends on your personal wishes, possibilities, and limitations. However, the most common is between 2 and 4 weeks.

  • When and where are you planning to go?

  • How long do you feel comfortable leaving for?

  • Do you have any restrictions due to schedules or laws, and what does your budget look like?

HOW TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY DURING WORKATIONS?

  • Powerbank.

  • Noise-cancelling headphones.

  • External hard drive.

  • Second laptop screen/portable monitor.
